There are many things we can do in orthodontics to avoid more serious orthodontic situations later. Its best for us to see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and the best time for the patient to be treated. Most of the incisors and permanent molars have usually come in or are about to erupt by this time, and crowding and other problems can be evaluated. The orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide the incoming teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, correct thumb sucking and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In short, early treatment can simplify later treatment.
